We made it!

As of the 20th of April 2018, three challenging but exciting years later, we are officially graduates with master’s degrees. My topic was Saturated absorption spectroscopy of rubidium and feedback control of LASER frequency for Doppler cooling, supervised by Dr. K. Govender.

Graduation was fun! It brings out that feeling of happiness and relief. Although my doctoral research started before graduation, the ceremony definitely reinforced the fact that I am now at the final leg of my studies; with some extra effort I shall try to keep it to the norm of four years, wish me luck!

Making Waves

Our research group was recently featured in a news article for the university. It was nothing extraordinary but a bit of recognition means a lot to us and we are now motivated more than ever!

I look forward to presenting our work at the end of this year. This field of research has never been explored at CPUT and is a hot topic internationally. It therefore goes without saying that we are very interested to see how other researchers react.

Lastly, we now have a webpage that you can visit periodically for updates on our progress.

The Journey Continues…

As of 2015, I officially have my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (computer systems).  I have decided to continue my studies in order to pursue a more academic career, where research is the main focus.  I have chosen to do my Master’s degree in a field that is a bit outside of my comfort zone, Quantum Technology (physics, in essence).

The research group I have joined aspires to develop a quantum computer. I will focus on developing the laser system necessary for realising the project. I find this very interesting and exciting, I get to experiment with lasers!

The challenge would be learning the theory behind such a complex system, a system which operates at an atomic level, a system which can only be fully understood using knowledge of quantum physics. I do enjoy a challenge and this one will be no different.

So the journey continues… I am unsure of when it will stop , but why stop when you’re having fun? 😉

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who attended the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) B.Tech Conference of 2014.

What a great experience! Congratulations to those who placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their respective categories. There were some really interesting projects and I am proud of all of us for doing our best!

Thank you to all the exhibitors at the event, CPUT is doing amazing things behind the scenes. The projects I saw were incredible and should be getting more publicity – all students should know of these projects, not just those who attended the conference.

Lastly, I MUST thank my supervisors, Mr. du Bruyn and Mr. de Villiers, for all their assistance and patience throughout this year. It has been an absolute joy working with you guys and I would enjoy another project in future!
